The story of this release is intertwined with that of St Mel’s Brewing Company in Longford, which has unfortunately closed in the aftermath of Covid.
Lough Ree loaned an ex-whiskey cask to St Mel’s Brewery to mature a limited edition of their highly regarded Brown Ale. As soon as the cask was emptied of ale, it was brought to Lanesborough and filled with 6-year-old, double distilled Single Malt Irish Whiskey from Great Northern Distillery, which had previously been matured in a first fill Bourbon Cask for 6 years. Lough Ree Distillery finished this whiskey in the beer cask for 11 weeks, prior to it being disgorged and cut to 43% ABV for bottling.
The sweet chocolate, caramel and malt flavours in St Mel’s Brown Ale really compliment the whiskey. There’s a nice fruitiness and sweetness, making the overall impression just like a fruit and nut chocolate bar. A lovely easy-drinking and moreish whiskey.
Tasting notes:
Nose: Tropical fruit combines with sweet chocolate and malt.
Palate: Soft with malt, milk chocolate, brown sugar, melon and a hint of citrus.
Finish: Fruity and sweet with milk chocolate.
