Founded in 1798, the distillery was built on what was a smugglers cove in the remote south of the island. Briefly closed, the re-opening of Ardbeg distillery in 1997 was great news for the many followers of this great distillery. Until the early 1980's, Ardbeg distillery had its own floor maltings. Unusually, there were no fans in the pagoda-roofed malting houses; the trapped peat smoke permeated the malt, producing an extremely pungent whisky. The bought in malt is some of the most heavily peated anywhere. The distillery uses both Bourbon & Sherry barrels. This distillery bottlings is left at 46% vol to avoid chill filtering to retain maximum flavour.
