Carrying on the popularity of the previous Tawny Port finish creations, the third batch of The Liberator is a similar vatting to its predecessor (comprising (25% 14 year old Cooley and 5 year old Great Northern). All were initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks and the younger Whiskey was finished for between 9-12 months in ex-Tawny Port casks that the makers sourced themselves through Port industry friends in Oporto. The freshness of the casks (3 weeks from emptying to refilling) made a fantastic addition to the quality whiskeys they used without overpowering them.
The whiskey was cut from cask strength to 46% ABV bottling strength by adding water over 5-6 weeks so as not to stress it, making for a smoother drink in your glass. The colour is natural, while the whiskey is not chill-filtered.
Batch 3 comprises of 1,000 numbered bottles (450 for Ireland) of 700ml at 46% ABV.
Tasting notes:
Nose: Intense fruity aromas with dried cherries and figs, citrus zest.
Palate: Smooth mouthfeel with a soft sparkle. Toasted malt and hazelnuts with blackberries, kiwi and orange zest.
Finish: Long, warm and spicy, again with pepper and citrus zest.
